  • Does IronScrew own the rights to the books in the 'Classics' section?
We do not own the rights to the original text of these books; they are in the public domain. Books in the public domain may no longer be copyrighted. However, we believe that these stories continue to tell us important things in beautiful ways. They remind us of adventure, reinforce God's design for us as men and women, and contemplate important ideas such as duty, danger, love, and virtue. We try to add value to these books by doing things such as writing new introductions that will help readers understand the themes and why these stories matter, modernizing the language, or adding illustrations. All of this original content is copyrighted. We hope you will read them to on your own or as a family.
  • How often does IronScrew release new books?
We are a small company still, so we hope to release 1-2 books per year. However, as we grow, we want to increase that number. We also want to publish other types of media such as picture books, collections of poetry, graphic novels, and audio productions. If this sounds like something that you get excited about, please contact us. We don't only need manuscripts, we also need people to help behind the scenes at IronScrew. If you love Christ and stories, you might be able to help us grow IronScrew into something that can reach millions of people.
  • Does IronScrew print and distribute everything on its own? / Are your books in any stores?
Currently we do not, although this is a goal down the road. For regular paper-back books we use Amazon to print and distribute. For books that require speciality printing or high quality images we contract with several small printing companies that allow us do limited runs. We distribute those books ourselves. We do not sell our books in any brick and mortar stores right now.
  • Are all of IronScrew's books appropriate for children?
No, we publish a wide range of literature. Some of our books make theological and philosophical arguments that children are not ready for. Other books may contain violence, language, or mature themes. While we do not publish books that contain gratuitous profanity, violence, or sexual situations, we understand that, if characters are going to reflect real people, authors often have to present the warts as well as the virtues. We label all children's books as such in our store and product descriptions.
  • How much does IronScrew pay authors?
It depends on the type of project. Typically, contracts follow the industry standard of paying a flat amount up front and then issuing a percentage of royalties to the author after that. Our goal is to be as lucrative for our authors as we can. We want to not only promote their books, but also to promote them as writers and thinkers.
  • How long does it take for a book to be published.
The answer to this questions varies. Factors that affect how long a book takes to be published include how much the book needs to be edited, whether the book needs specialized printing, whether we need to ensure that non-fiction books are theologically sound and well researched, and even what other projects we are currently working on. On top of that, we also need to develop a marketing plan for each book. We want the books to come out as soon as possible, but we will not rush the process. We want to make sure that everything that we publish is high-quality, beautiful, and will reach as many people as possible.
  • What kind of relationship does IronScrew have with its published authors?
We seek to promote and benefit our authors, not just the books they write. This means that, if the authors are interested, we might invite authors to participate in discussions and interviews, help teach at writing clinics, and maybe even offer online courses. While we definitely pay authors for this work in addition to the contract for their books, we also believe this will help authors make connections in the community and reach a broader group of people.
  • How do I submit an idea for IronScrew to publish?
We welcome submissions. We want to make sure that you are not submitting an idea only, but that you have partially completed your project. This means that you have developed the plot or central idea of the book, you have done a significant amount of writing, and that you have polished some of the work so that it is finished. This lets us evaluate how well you write, how close you are to being done, and how much you have fleshed-out the ideas. If this describes your project, then please use the link below to begin the submission process.
