WHY

IronScrew?

mayflower-approaching-land_edited_edited

When the Pilgrims travelled from England to the new world, their ship, The Mayflower, sailed into a fierce storm. The wind was so strong that it snapped the main mast. While the captain did have replacement beams to fix it, his crew could not lift them into place because they were so heavy. The situation was desperate when, all of a sudden, the pilgrims asked the captain if a jack screw would be helpful. The captain said that, of course it would be, but that they did not have one. Amazingly, the pilgrims had brought one with them and they rushed to unpack this 'great iron screw'. With its help, the crew were able to fix the mast and sail through the storm, arriving safely in the new world.

Why did the Pilgrims have this iron screw? Many historians claim that the screw had been part of the printing press that they used in Holland to print and distribute their religious literature. It played a vital role in helping keep the puritan movement alive. Yet, in the new world, the screw would not press stained letter blocks down onto paper to create pamphlets and tracts. Rather, the screw would be used, as it was on the ship, to lift beams and posts as the Pilgrims built their new lives. Thus, this great iron screw fueled their religious zeal, saved them in a terrible storm, and assembled the the colony that they set out to plant in God's name and for His honor.

IronScrew publishing seeks to anchor ourselves in the deep theological and cultural heritage that we inherited from those puritans, while at the same time strives to help build a new movement for God's glory. We want to be part of the modern reformation by producing literature that captures the imagination and inspires people to live boldly and courageously.
